CHAPTER EIGHT

SO THAT WAS what full-blown morning sickness felt like. She’d been on much choppier water in the past and she’d been fine. What she’d experienced back there, the queasiness, the nausea, the punishing urge to eliminate the piece of toast she’d had for breakfast and the small amount of lunch she’d managed to eat, was unlike anything she’d been dealt so far. Or perhaps it was a combination of morning sickness and motion sickness altogether.

All she knew was it had nearly knocked her off her feet.

Cassie rushed back to her suite as soon as they docked at the island. Luckily, Julian wasn’t asking too many questions. “You’ll find your sea legs soon enough,” he assured her as she ran down the wooden pathway toward the beach.

“I’ll come check on you later,” he added, yelling at her retreating back.

Cassie could barely make out his words in her rush to get away. She’d already been physically ill once, she didn’t want him to witness the next time. And it was clear there’d be a next time.

Luckily the feeling seemed to be subsiding. Though it had come at a very inopportune time. Julian had been trying to show her the best places to snorkel. She’d be lucky if she retained any of it. If not, she’d be behind in at least one of her duties. After a quick, refreshing nap, she jumped in the shower to clean up and try to regain some semblance of normalcy.

By the time she left the shower, the nausea seemed to be only a lingering aftereffect. Thank heavens. She had no hope of functioning if this was going to be a recurring thing. She might have to consider making a trip in to see a doctor at the local medical clinic to ask about some of her options.

Quickly toweling off and getting dressed in a comfortable smock dress, she flung open her door to make her way back down to the lobby.

Only to run into Julian mid-knock. Literally. They collided with a heavy thud.

“Oomph.”

Panic rushed through her veins when she lost her footing and began to topple backward. The baby.

Suddenly, a set of strong arms wrapped around her midsection. “Whoa. Careful.”

Cassie felt the relief clear to her toes as he steadied her on her feet. His arms were still wrapped tight around her as she took her time to regain her breath.

“Are you all right?” he asked above her head.

“I—I think so.”

“Still having trouble balancing?”

“Maybe just a little.”

Julian made no move to release her. Cassie found she wasn’t quite ready to pull away yet either. She felt safe in his arms, protected. Like she could finally let go and breathe. The now familiar scent of spicy cologne and sea air combined with his soothing warmth all enveloped her like a protective cocoon.

She realized what she hadn’t been willing to face up until now. She felt safe with Julian. And heaven help her, she was beginning to develop feelings for him. Complicated beyond all reason, but she’d be a fool to deny it any longer.
